Let's Talk Safety...

I know this topic sounds like another boring lecture from your mom, but if you don’t take the necessary steps to protect yourself, your passengers, and your investment, your outdoor adventures could be cut short...temporarily or even permanently. No one wants that! So what are some of the best safety upgrades for your UTV? Here we will keep it simple and outline the top safety upgrades and safety items for almost anything the trail might throw at you.

  • A spare tire, jack, tire repair kit and pump  - Tire repairs are among the most common you will do on the trail, so it is important you are prepared. *Buy a front tire as a spare so you are able to use it on the front or the back.

  • Spare belt - Another common trail repair is a belt. It is not a matter of IF your belt goes but WHEN.

  • Tool kit  - When it comes to having to make a repair, you won’t get very far without the  proper tools. Make sure to include the necessary tools you’d need for any type of repair to your machine. Before you head out, check for fit.

  • Winch  - Voted the #1 aftermarket accessory, for those times when you will need to find a way to get out of a stuck-situation. Even though we know we should never ride alone, it happens, a winch is an absolute for those situations.

  • Mirrors  - Mirrors will allow you to safely view who and what is around you on all sides, and at all times, helping you avoid accidents.

  • 5-point harness  - A 5-point harness will keep you safer, more secure, and allow you to operate the machine with greater efficiency. In the case of a rollover and/or accident, a 5-point harness will keep you and your passengers secure by holding you in place; standard belts allow for shifting around in the cab, which feels less secure and can also be uncomfortable on long rides.

  • Fire extinguisher - A fuel or oil fire has the potential to do a lot of damage in a very short amount of time, so it’s very important to be prepared with a way to put them out as quickly and safely as possible.

  • GPS - When you’re out cruising, it’s easy to lose track of where you are, or have been, a GPS can help you get back to camp (or home) easily.

    • Know-how and practice  - None of your upgrades will do you any good if you do not have the necessary know-how beforehand. When it comes to anything repair-related, we suggest practicing. Practice replacing the tire and belts so that if the time comes you have already learned the best and quickest ways to get it done, leaving you with as little down time as possible on the trail.
*Also to be fully prepared, you might want to research common trail repairs for your specific make and model and practice those as well.

Other items that can be important and found at most grocery stores or outdoor retailers are:

  • First Aid kit
  • Small survival kit
  • Sunscreen
  • Bugspray
  • Water
  • Anything that may be specific to the needs of yourself or your passengers

  •      With this basic list of items, you are ready to tackle the trails and face anything without hurting your fun factor, or at least leaving you able to attend to any “hurt” that might happen! Happy (and safe!) riding!
